The Wheel Deal

While most of the new cars sold in Singapore come with standard alloy “sport rims”, as opposed to other markets where cars are sold with steel wheels, enthusiasts looking to modify their cars usually start with the wheels, because the wheel design can change a car’s overall appearance. The Sienta may be a common sight on our roads thanks to parallel importers, but Borneo Motors launched its version last month to make it an official Toyota model with factory support. Its quirky styling makes it look like a multi-purpose vehicle for Star Wars Stormtroopers.

However, with a wheel with the right combination of dark and light colours, one can add a touch of sophistication to the car. Here are several examples from the Toyota Sienta Club.

Enkei Tuning SC46

This 16-inch Enkei Tuning SC46 is an example of more modern design. With a glossy black paint, combined with spokes which extend to the edge of the lip, it gives the SC46 an impression of a 17-inch wheel. The ten thin spoke pattern with sharp lines, angles and engraved branding on the wheel lip makes it stand out from the crowd.

Because of their simple, functional, lightweight look, the glossy black finish accented by machined highlights around the spokes gives a very head-turning contrast! Tyres are Yokohama’s BluEarth-A AE-50, an eco comfort tyre which doesn’t compromise on handling.

Enkei RPF1

If you want your car to look like a racy, then a racing design would be appropriate. What else better than a wheel which evolved from Enkei’s partnership with the McLaren Mercedes Formula One Team? The RPF1 was developed using the same technology as the Formula One race wheel.

It may be finished in common silver, but the twin six spoke design is straight from the McLaren Mercedes Formula One race wheel which is capable of achieving better stress dispersion on curves, hard braking, and extreme race driving. It won’t turn the family car into a racer, but it sure adds a certain level of aggression to the overall look! Once again, the driver chose the Advan Fleva V701 high performance sports tyre for a comfortable but sporty drive.

Enkei Draco

What if you want both? Meet the Draco with its lightweight, five v-spoke design. This modern and aggressive V-Spoke wheel in an all-new anthracite or black machined finish and comes with a cleanly styled center cap to complete the look.

This modern variation on the classic 5-spoke is a hybrid of the mesh and spoke style. The robust, simple and easy-to-clean design get has a void between the spokes of what would otherwise be considered one singular spoke. The slender spokes give it a very light appearance while the emphasized edges give good clearance for brake upgrades. The tyre choice here is the Yokohama BluEarth-A AE-50, a solid performing low-noise eco comfort tyre which doesn’t compromise handling.
